André Gide’s L’immoraliste was one of the first great books in French lit I have read. Too bad he’s not read that much any more.

A very nice annotated volume of short stories for the intermediate English student of French.
Six Centuries of French Literature
I have never taught with this book. It is an autographed edition that was donated to my collection. Useful if you have ever wanted to get a traditional overview of French literature.
Sartre, Les Mots. An autobiography
This book was first introduced to me by René Girard, as being one of the better autobiographies in the modern era. A bit unconventional, it treats Sartre’s first steps in literature as well as his childhood living with an overbearing grandfather.
